Aker Solutions Turns to Norwegian Firm for Personnel on Northern Lights Expansion Project

2025-05-07 10:28

Wedoany.com Report-May 7, Norway-based Aker Solutions has engaged Multiconsult Norge to provide specialized personnel for the second phase of the Northern Lights project, a key component of the Longship carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiative. Multiconsult’s team will integrate with Aker Solutions’ project group, focusing on civil engineering disciplines to support the expansion of CO2 transport and storage infrastructure.

The Northern Lights project, a joint venture between Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, with Equinor as the technical service provider, aims to increase its capacity from 1.5 million to over 5 million tons of CO2 per year by 2028. A final investment decision for Phase 2 was made in late March 2025. Multiconsult will also involve its subsidiary, LINK Arkitektur, to contribute architectural expertise for specific aspects of the CO2 storage and transport development.

Multiconsult Grethe Bergly, Multiconsult’s CEO, emphasized the project’s significance: “The Northern Lights project plays a key role in the reduction of industrial emissions in Europe and fits well into our strategy of being an enabler of the green transition. Therefore, I am very pleased that Multiconsult has received a contract also for the second phase of this groundbreaking project.”

The contract, valued at approximately NOK 27 million (about $2.6 million), with potential increases to NOK 40 million (about $3.87 million) including site supervision, covers detailed design and oversight of civil works, including the substation building, equipment foundations, and outdoor areas. Work is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2025, with most tasks expected to conclude by the first quarter of 2026, and the entire project set for completion by 2028.

Phase 1 of Northern Lights was officially opened on September 26, 2024, in Øygarden, near Bergen, marking the facility’s readiness to handle CO2 storage. Phase 2, supported by funding from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility for Energy, includes contracts awarded to Subsea7 and Aker Solutions by Equinor. This follows Multiconsult’s earlier collaboration with Aker Solutions and LINK Arkitektur on electrification projects for oil and gas installations off Norway’s coast.

The Northern Lights project strengthens Norway’s role in sustainable energy solutions, contributing to reduced industrial emissions across Europe through advanced CCS technology.
