Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 28, On Thursday, King Mohammed VI officially launched Morocco’s $10.3 billion Kenitra-Marrakech rail project, a major step toward enhancing the country’s transportation infrastructure. The 430-kilometer high-speed rail will connect key cities, including Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakech, a leading tourist destination. Scheduled for completion by 2030, the rail line will significantly reduce travel times, cutting the journey between Marrakech and Tangier by two hours to just 2 hours and 40 minutes at a speed of 350 kilometers per hour. The trip from Rabat to Casablanca’s airport will take only 35 minutes.
The project aligns with Morocco’s preparations to co-host the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal, boosting connectivity for visitors and residents. The state-owned rail company, ONCF, has secured contracts to acquire 168 new trains, including high-speed double-deck trains manufactured by Alstom, each capable of carrying 640 passengers. These additions will support the expanded rail network and improve passenger capacity.
This initiative builds on Morocco’s ongoing efforts to modernize its domestic railway system, fostering economic growth and tourism. The Kenitra-Marrakech line is expected to strengthen links between urban centers, streamline travel, and enhance the country’s appeal as a global destination. By 2030, the rail network will offer faster, more efficient travel options, supporting Morocco’s vision for sustainable development and improved infrastructure.
