Sungrow Hydrogen Launches Green Hydrogen Production With Hybrid Electrolyser System

2025-05-07 11:23

Wedoany.com Report-May 7, Sungrow Hydrogen has launched China’s first green hydrogen project utilizing both PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) and alkaline electrolysers in joint operation. This milestone project, located in Daye city, Hubei province, is part of the Daye Green Power initiative and marks a significant advancement in China's hydrogen production capabilities. The 27 MW facility is a collaboration with Daye Green Power and is designed to optimize efficiency while reducing energy consumption, positioning it as a global benchmark for future green hydrogen developments.

The facility integrates five 5MW alkaline electrolysers and one 2MW PEM electrolyser, all supplied by Sungrow. The hybrid system combines the cost efficiency and stability of alkaline electrolysis with the dynamic flexibility of PEM technology. This combination aims to enhance hydrogen production efficiency, improve dynamic performance, and expand the load regulation range. According to Sungrow's spokesperson, the joint operation of these systems represents a technical validation of their approach to green hydrogen production.

The $476.2 million (CNY 3.44 billion) project is located on an abandoned mine site and includes 300 MW of co-located solar panels. An AI-powered smart management system is also integrated into the facility, optimizing renewable power matching and providing real-time safety control.

One of the unique features of the Daye Green Power project is its underground hydrogen storage system. The facility stores hydrogen both in above-ground spherical tanks and in a 30-meter-long cavern, with a diameter of five meters, a first for China. This underground storage solution is designed to hold surplus hydrogen, setting a new benchmark for green hydrogen developments globally.

The plant is expected to produce 1,800 tons of green hydrogen annually. This hydrogen will be used to fuel hydrogen buses and industrial vehicles, such as dump trucks and excavators, in Daye's local mining industry, which is known for its coal, iron, and copper resources. The hydrogen project is poised to integrate seamlessly with the region's long-standing smelting industry, contributing to cleaner energy use in the area.

In addition to the Daye project, Sungrow Hydrogen is involved in other strategic hydrogen initiatives, including the Shanxi Yulin Coal Chemical Industry Base. The company continues to play a key role in advancing China’s hydrogen economy with its innovative technologies and projects.
