Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 23, Bulgaria has committed over 1.15 billion levs ($675 million) to support 82 standalone renewable energy storage projects through its EU-funded RESTORE procurement initiative, as announced by the Ministry of Energy on April 17.

These projects will deliver a combined usable energy storage capacity of 9,712.89 MWh, exceeding the program’s initial target of 3,000 MWh by more than threefold. This significant capacity will strengthen Bulgaria’s ability to store and manage energy from renewable sources, enhancing the reliability of its energy grid.

The Ministry of Energy set a deadline of December 5, 2024, for submitting project proposals. On December 6, 2024, it reported receiving 151 applications valued at nearly 5 billion levs, far surpassing the allocated funding of 1.154 billion levs. The overwhelming response underscores strong industry interest in advancing energy storage solutions in Bulgaria.

The 82 selected projects are designed to bolster the country’s renewable energy infrastructure. By increasing storage capacity, Bulgaria aims to better integrate clean energy sources, such as solar and wind, into its national energy system. This aligns with efforts to promote sustainability and energy independence.

Funded by the EU, the RESTORE program prioritizes initiatives that optimize renewable energy use. The chosen projects were evaluated for their ability to meet Bulgaria’s energy storage needs while adhering to the program’s rigorous standards. The high storage capacity proposed by these projects reflects their potential to transform the country’s energy landscape.

The Ministry of Energy highlighted that these projects will contribute to national energy goals by improving grid stability and supporting the shift to cleaner energy sources. The substantial interest from applicants demonstrates Bulgaria’s growing role in renewable energy innovation.

The successful projects are expected to facilitate the efficient use of renewable energy, ensuring a steady supply even as demand fluctuates. This initiative positions Bulgaria to meet its energy objectives while fostering advancements in storage technology.

The RESTORE program’s focus on renewable energy storage underscores Bulgaria’s commitment to a sustainable energy future. By investing in these projects, the country is taking significant steps to enhance its energy infrastructure, reduce reliance on non-renewable sources, and support regional efforts toward a cleaner, more resilient
