EDPR Inaugurates 200MW US PV Project

2025-05-08 15:43

Wedoany.com Report-May 8, EDP Renewables (EDPR) North America has officially launched the 200MW Scarlet 2 Solar Energy Park in Fresno County, California. This new project follows the success of EDPR NA’s Scarlet 1 Solar Energy Park, which went into commercial operation in 2024 and includes 200MW of solar power along with a 40MW/160MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

Scarlet 2 features a co-located 150MW/600MWh BESS, further enhancing the project's resilience and reliability. The full 200MW solar capacity is contracted through a 15-year virtual Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), while the BESS's resource adequacy is secured under long-term agreements with Ava Community Energy and San José Clean Energy. These agreements are part of California's Resource Adequacy Program, which ensures that entities providing electricity have enough capacity to meet customer demand and maintain grid reliability.

The addition of Scarlet 2 brings EDPR NA’s total operational solar, wind, and storage capacity in California to more than 1.1GW, solidifying its position as a major renewable energy developer in the state. Scarlet 2 is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 68,000 homes annually.

Beyond its energy output, the Scarlet 2 project is expected to have significant economic benefits for the local community. The project will contribute millions of dollars to local governments through tax payments and stimulate the economy by spending millions at local businesses, including gas stations, retailers, restaurants, and hotels. Additionally, the project supported the creation of over 140 construction jobs, generating more than $1.5 million in in-state spending.

Sandhya Ganapathy, CEO of EDP Renewables North America, said: “After our successful launch of Scarlet 1, we are thrilled to add Scarlet 2 to our portfolio and build on our record of delivering energy reliability and resiliency for Fresno County and the Golden State. We are proud that our meaningful partnerships and investments in the community helped generate strong local support for the expansion of Scarlet Solar Energy Park.”

In terms of sustainability, EDPR NA has continued its commitment to environmental stewardship through its Close the Loop Program. During construction, the project recycled over 1,700 tonnes of materials, resulting in more than 60% of the total reported construction material being recycled.

EDPR’s operational footprint in California spans several key projects, including two phases of the Scarlet Solar Energy Park, three phases of the Rising Tree Wind Farm in Kern County, two phases of the Lone Valley Solar Park in San Bernardino County, two phases of the Sandrini 1 & 2 Solar Energy Park in Kern County, and the Windhub A Solar Park in Kern County.
