Noatum Maritime Embraces Zero-Emission Harbor Ops With All-Electric Vessels

2025-04-22 09:45

Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 22, Noatum Maritime, a UAE-based maritime services provider under AD Ports Group’s Maritime & Shipping Cluster, has acquired the region’s first fully electric hydrofoiling pilot boat and two electric tugboats. These vessels, set to operate at Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi, support the company’s commitment to sustainable maritime operations and reduced environmental impact.

The 12-meter Artemis EF-12 pilot boat, powered by Artemis Technologies’ eFoiler system, is the first 100% electric pilot boat in the region. By lifting its hull above the water, the vessel reduces drag, cutting energy use by up to 85% while enhancing speed and efficiency. This design lowers fuel and maintenance costs, advancing eco-friendly pilotage services. The boat is expected to begin operations in 2025.

Additionally, Noatum Maritime has purchased two Damen RSD-E 2513 electric tugboats, with one already integrated into the fleet after a successful trial and the second scheduled for service in April 2025. Recognized by Guinness World Records as the most powerful electric tugboat, these 70-ton bollard pull tugs feature rapid-charging technology, enabling multiple tasks on a single charge and full recharging in two hours. Their use will reduce port emissions while maintaining high-performance harbor assistance.

Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba, CEO of AD Ports Group’s Maritime & Shipping Cluster, stated: “By investing in zero-emission pilotage and harbour operations, Noatum Maritime is delivering a cleaner, more efficient solution that reduces the environmental footprint of port operations, drives long term cost savings and also benefits our customers.”

In a related development, Noatum Maritime and Bahrain’s Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Company (ASRY) launched a joint venture, ASRY Marine, in February 2025. The partnership, marked by the arrival of four modern tugs at ASRY’s headquarters, aims to enhance marine services in Bahrain and the broader region.

Further supporting sustainable operations, AD Ports Group conducted its first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering at Khalifa Port last week. In collaboration with Monjasa, the operation supplied LNG fuel to the containership MSC Thais, berthed at Abu Dhabi Terminals, using the Monjasa-chartered vessel Green Zeebrugge. This initiative aligns with efforts to promote cleaner fuel alternatives in maritime activities.

These advancements underscore Noatum Maritime’s focus on sustainability, cost efficiency, and enhanced service offerings at Khalifa Port and beyond.
