Wedoany.com Report-May 7, South Korea’s HD Hyundai and Denmark’s A.P. Møller – Maersk have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on sustainable maritime technologies and enhance global logistics services. The agreement, announced recently, focuses on advancing decarbonization solutions and optimizing shipping operations.
The partnership includes a six-month trial of HD Hyundai’s AI-based autonomous navigation system, HiNAS Control, developed by its venture Avikus, and OceanWise route optimization technology. These systems will be installed on a Maersk container vessel, built and delivered by HD Hyundai, to assess their impact on fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions reduction. The trial aims to validate the environmental and operational benefits of advanced navigation technologies.
The collaboration also explores opportunities in ship retrofitting to improve energy efficiency, increase cargo capacity on containerships, and implement dual-fuel propulsion systems. Additionally, HD Hyundai and Maersk plan to conduct joint research on solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), a promising technology for efficient, low-emission power generation on vessels. Maersk’s representative stated: “The driving force behind the trial is the necessity to validate fuel-saving and greenhouse gas emission reduction impacts of optimized navigation systems.”
To strengthen its global supply chain, HD Hyundai will leverage Maersk’s integrated logistics services, including increased ocean freight volumes through Maersk’s East-West network, as well as its air freight, land transportation, and warehousing capabilities. This partnership enhances HD Hyundai’s logistics efficiency while supporting Maersk’s role as a leading global logistics provider.
Since 2021, Maersk has placed significant orders with HD Hyundai, including 19 methanol-powered containerships. Notable deliveries include the 16,000 TEU Ane Maersk, the world’s first green methanol-powered vessel of its kind, followed by sister ships Astrid Maersk and Antonia Maersk. The latest addition, the 16,000 TEU Albert Maersk, was christened in Mumbai, India, in late February 2025.
HD Hyundai’s CEO emphasized the partnership’s potential: “This collaboration with Maersk allows us to combine our technological expertise with their global reach to drive sustainable innovation in the maritime industry.” The initiative reflects a shared commitment to reducing emissions and enhancing operational efficiency in shipping.
This partnership positions HD Hyundai and Maersk to lead in sustainable maritime solutions, supporting the industry’s transition to cleaner technologies and more efficient global logistics networks.
