Hyundai Unveils the New Elexio Electric SUV for China With 435 Miles Range

2025-05-08 17:03

Wedoany.com Report-May 8, Hyundai introduced its ELEXIO electric SUV at a media-exclusive event in Shanghai, emphasizing its strategic focus on China’s electric vehicle market. Developed by Beijing Hyundai, a joint venture with BAIC Motor, the ELEXIO features a sleek design tailored for Chinese consumers and offers a CLTC driving range of up to 435 miles (700 km). The global debut, held on a Wednesday, positions the SUV as a key step in Hyundai’s electrification efforts.

Built on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform, the ELEXIO incorporates local technology to appeal to regional preferences, distinguishing it from the IONIQ series. It sports a full-length front light bar, a closed grille, and an aerodynamic profile. On April 21, Beijing Hyundai announced its “In China, for China, to the World” strategy in Shanghai, highlighting the ELEXIO as the first model in this initiative. “The ELEXIO SUV’s debut opened a new starting point for the transformation from traditional fuel vehicle giant to electrification,” a Beijing Hyundai spokesperson stated.

The ELEXIO’s 800V architecture enables charging from 30% to 80% in about 27 minutes, enhancing user convenience. Beijing Hyundai plans to expand its lineup with additional electric, hybrid, and extended-range vehicles, including sedans, SUVs, and MPVs, to meet varied market needs. The ELEXIO targets the premium segment, aiming to deliver high-quality performance and design.

Hyundai views China as a vital market for global automakers and has invested 8 billion yuan ($1.1 billion) to strengthen its presence. This includes establishing its first overseas R&D center in China in 2024 to develop vehicles suited to local preferences. The investment also supports plans to double vehicle exports from China, following 50,000 units exported in 2024.

The ELEXIO’s launch reflects Hyundai’s efforts to compete with leading Chinese EV manufacturers like BYD. “Beijing Hyundai said it will continue to anchor its strategic position in the Chinese market,” a company representative noted, underscoring its long-term commitment. Final specifications and pricing will be shared closer to the vehicle’s market release later this year, with the ELEXIO expected to drive Hyundai’s growth in the world’s largest EV market.
