Wedoany.com Report-May 8, Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has developed a carbon capture solution (CCS) that is nearly ready for commercial use, following extensive development since 2019. Based in Helsinki, the company reports that the system can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 70%, supporting the maritime industry’s efforts to meet stricter environmental standards, including the International Maritime Organization’s 2050 targets.
Håkan Agnevall, President and CEO of Wärtsilä, stated: “CCS is a game-changer for the maritime industry, and we are already seeing huge interest in the market for this solution. Ahead of shipping’s net-zero targets, this new technology complements the industry’s ongoing efforts to dramatically reduce emissions from vessels and prevent stranded assets.”
The CCS was recently installed on Solvang’s ethylene carrier Clipper Eris, marking it as the world’s first vessel with a full-scale CCS, retrofitted by Singapore’s Seatrium in January 2025. The project involved collaboration with Solvang, Seatrium, Wärtsilä, MAN Energy Solutions, and SINTEF. Since departing Singapore in February 2025, Clipper Eris has utilized the system to capture emissions from all exhaust gas sources, advancing Solvang’s sustainability goals.
Wärtsilä noted that Clipper Eris was an ideal candidate for CCS testing due to its existing technologies, including exhaust gas cleaning systems. Solvang is also partnering with Wärtsilä to ensure its newbuild vessels, currently under construction, are CCS-ready, incorporating compatible scrubber systems, space reservations, and utility requirements for heavy fuel oil (HFO) engines.
The CCS is designed for flexibility, available in various sizes and configurations for both newbuilds and retrofits. It can capture emissions from any carbon-based fuel, including HFO, methanol, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and marine gas oil (MGO). Wärtsilä has secured multiple orders for its CCS-ready scrubber systems, including a contract in March 2023 from an Asian shipyard and another in September 2024 with German operator Leonhardt & Blumberg for three containerships.
Wärtsilä’s CCS supports the maritime industry’s transition to cleaner operations, offering a practical solution for reducing emissions and enhancing vessel sustainability. The technology’s adaptability and proven performance position it as a key tool for shipowners aiming to align with global environmental objectives.
